What to do in Kotor
Kotor sits at the far end of the Bay of Kotor, a deep, winding inlet ringed by mountains that rise straight out of the water. Its walled Old Town and the bay around it have been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1979.
The walled Old Town
A car-free maze of stone lanes and small squares inside Venetian walls. At its centre is the Cathedral of St Tryphon, consecrated in 1166 and one of the oldest cathedrals on the Adriatic.
The city walls and St John's Fortress
Roughly 1,350 steps climb the hillside from the Old Town to the fortress of San Giovanni, about 260 m above the bay. Go early: there is almost no shade on the way up.
Boat trips on the bay
Boats leave from the waterfront for Perast and the man-made islet of Our Lady of the Rocks, with its church and votive collection. Budva's beaches are half an hour back down the coast.
